Introduction
We offer the bachelor of science in computer science and engineering (extended major), as well as a minor in computer science.
We designed our degree program to prepare you:
n for entry into the professional practice of computer science and computer engineering
(Our degree program provides a strong background in mathematics, science, and engineering as well as computer science.)
n for industry, by providing you with a strong design background for both hardware and software using computer-based tools
(We require a capstone design project as part of all of our degree programs.)
n for further education in graduate programs
(You will be ready to continue your studies in computer science, computer engineering, or possibly another field at the graduate level.)
Our computer science and engineering program is accredited by both the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and the Computer Science Accreditation Board.
Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering
(extended major)
To earn this degree, you must complete the three components described in the following paragraphs. This degree does not require a minor.

*Be aware that some courses required for your degree may have prerequisites that you must also take. Check all course descriptions to find out. (You may be able to count these prerequisites toward your liberal studies credit.)
Also, please note that NAU requires that at least 30 hours of the courses you take for your degree must be upper-division courses.
Finally, be aware that the total hours for your degree will be less than 141 if you count some courses under both major requirements and liberal studies. Contact your department for details.
Preprofessional Requirements
You take the following 58 hours:
n basic science and mathematics:
PHY 161, 161L, 262, and 262L; CHM 151; MAT 136, 137, 226, 238, and 239; and MAT 316 or 362 (32 hours)
n engineering science and applied mathematics:
EE 188, 188L, and 339; EGR 225; and a 3-hour CENE or ME course (14 hours)
n engineering design: EGR 286 (3 hours)
n ENG 302W, which meets NAU’s junior-level writing requirement (3 hours)
n 6 hours of additional courses chosen from the aesthetics and humanistic inquiry, cultural understanding, or social and political worlds blocks of the liberal studies courses

Professional Requirements
You take the following 48 hours that provide you with a thorough background in both computer science and computer engineering:
n CSE 126, 136, 247, 249, 255, 315, 386, 396, 400, 421, and 476 (33 hours)
n 12 hours of professional CSE electives, numbered above 300, chosen with your academic adviser
(We offer at least 6 hours of professional CSE electives each semester. You may also substitute selected EGR and MAT courses with the department chair’s approval.)
n CSE 486C, which meets NAU’s senior capstone requirement (3 hours)
Liberal Studies Requirements
See the General Academic Requirements chapter of this catalog for information about the 35 hours of liberal studies credit that we require. Contact your department for information about liberal studies courses that are specific to this degree.
Minor In Computer Science
To complete this minor, you take the following 18 hours:
n CSE 126, 136, 249, and 396 (12 hours)
n 6 hours of approved electives from CSE courses at the 200 level or above
Be aware that some of the courses required for your minor may have prerequisites that you must also take. Check all course descriptions for additional information.
Contact the Computer Science and Engineering department to be assigned a minor adviser.
Computer Science and Engineering Courses
Some courses may not be offered every semester. Check with the department and the current Schedule of Classes for information about when specific courses are offered.
Please be aware that you must earn a grade of C or better in any prerequisites to the courses listed here to be eligible to register for these courses.
CSE 112 Introduction to the World Wide Web and Internet (3). Provides a broad introduction to World Wide Web and Internet-related software, including email, HTML, telnet, and FTP. Includes discovery of ethical and privacy issues in e-commerce. 2 hrs. lecture, 2 hrs. lab. Prerequisite: MAT 110.
